The first batch of the Atmosphere Foundation Zero to Dive Master Scholarship Programme celebrated the completion of their training on 7 July 2026, marking the end of an intensive journey from first-time divers to qualified dive professionals.
Delivered in partnership with Moodhu Bulhaa Dive Centre, the fully funded programme was created to make professional dive training more accessible to young Maldivians. Ten participants, comprising five women and five men, were selected for the inaugural cohort and provided with training, accommodation, meals and dive insurance throughout the programme.
Over approximately three months, the scholars progressed through PADI Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver training before completing the requirements leading towards Divemaster qualification. Their days began early and combined classroom learning, practical sessions, open-water dives and the careful completion of dive logs.
The programme extended beyond technical diving skills. Participants received Emergency First Response training and completed the PADI AWARE Coral Reef Conservation course, strengthening their understanding of diver safety and the responsibility of protecting the marine environment. Those who initially needed additional support in the water were also given swimming lessons, ensuring that each participant had the opportunity to progress with confidence.
The graduation ceremony celebrated the discipline and determination required to complete this demanding journey. For some graduates, it also marked the beginning of employment, with job opportunities already secured within the dive and tourism industry.
This transition from training to work lies at the heart of the scholarship. Surrounded by one of the world’s most remarkable marine environments, the Atmosphere Foundation believes that Maldivian youth should have the opportunity to participate professionally in the industries built around it. However, the cost and practical demands of dive certification can place this career path beyond the reach of many young people.
By removing these barriers, the Zero to Dive Master Scholarship Programme provides more than a professional qualification. It creates a direct pathway into employment, builds valuable local expertise and supports greater Maldivian participation within the country’s dive sector.
The graduation of the first batch represents an important beginning for the programme. Each graduate leaves with new skills and a deeper relationship with the ocean, ready to turn an opportunity beneath the surface into a career above it.
