The Reading Room was established by two experienced language experts, Ms. Aminath Nihan and Ms. Asima Abdul Gadir with the objective of providing teachers with practical training in effective early literacy teaching methods. Interactive, task-based workshops are organized to help teachers and parents delve into the concepts and techniques necessary for engaging young children in reading and writing.
To expand its impact and reach, The Reading Room submitted a funding proposal to Atmosphere Foundation under the project titled ‘Read Right with The Reading Room.’ The proposal aimed to offer free training to schools upon request. The initiative was launched in June 2022 and successfully completed in December of the same year.
As a result of this initiative, The Reading Room was able to offer reading sessions and have a positive impact on the lives of 3044 students across 24 schools in the Maldives. The organization conducted workshops for 463 teachers on teaching literacy reading skills and provided workshops for 903 parents on how to foster literacy development in the home environment. These workshops were met with positive feedback and high praise from parents and teachers from the participating communities.
