Harvest Heroes – Youth Farming, HDh. Atoll

Across several islands in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, students are learning that food does not simply arrive on a plate,

but rather begins in the soil. Through the Harvest Heroes programme, young participants are gaining hands-on experience in farming, discovering how crops grow and how sustainable agriculture can support island communities.

The initiative introduces students to practical farming techniques, including the use of fertigation systems, where nutrients are delivered through irrigation to support healthy plant growth. In an early pilot project conducted at HDh. Nolhivaram, 25 students planted and cared for 40 cucumber vines within their school compound. Over time, the plants produced a harvest of 68 kilograms of cucumbers, giving students a first-hand understanding of the effort and care involved in growing food.

Building on this pilot project, activities have expanded across five islands in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, where schools and community partners are helping students explore sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.

The programme aims not only to teach farming skills but also to encourage young people to share their knowledge within their families and communities.
Through simple acts of planting, watering, and harvesting, students are discovering a deeper connection to the land and the food they eat.
